You’ve decided it’s time to remove that tattoo, but now you’re wondering: how does this actually work? How many sessions will it take? And honestly, how much is it going to hurt?
These are exactly the questions you should be asking before you book your first appointment. Here’s a straightforward look at the process, from the science behind the laser to what your skin is doing between sessions.
How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Actually Work?
Laser tattoo removal works by targeting the ink particles trapped beneath your skin. High-intensity laser pulses break those particles down into microscopic fragments, which your immune system then absorbs and carries away through the lymphatic system.
Think of it like this: your body couldn’t remove the ink on its own when the tattoo was applied because the particles were too large. The laser does the work of breaking them down into pieces small enough for your body to process.
Each session targets more ink, so your tattoo fades progressively over time, not all at once.
What Lasers Does Caddell’s Use?
Not all tattoo removal clinics use the same technology, and the lasers matter. At Caddell’s, we use three different systems depending on your tattoo’s characteristics:
- Lumenis PiQo4 – Combines nanosecond Q-switch and picosecond wavelengths, making it effective for both deep, dark tattoos and lighter ink. With four wavelengths, it can target most ink colors.
- Candela PicoWay – A picosecond laser with three wavelengths, particularly effective on green ink, which is notoriously difficult to remove.
- Fractional CO2 Laser – Used on challenging tattoos to help break up stubborn ink by creating micro-channels in the skin’s surface, improving the laser’s ability to reach deeper layers.
Having access to multiple lasers means we can adapt the treatment to your specific tattoo rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. This is one of the reasons tattoo removal takes real expertise, it’s not just pointing a laser at skin. After 24 years in the industry, clinic owner Debbie Caddell has seen lasers evolve dramatically, and knowing which technology to use, and when, is as important as the equipment itself.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
This is the question everyone wants a simple answer to, and the honest answer is: it depends.
Most tattoos require somewhere in the range of 10 to 30 sessions. The factors that influence this include:
- Ink color – Black and red respond fastest. Green, blue, and yellow take longer. White ink cannot be removed.
- Tattoo age – Older tattoos often fade more quickly than newer ones.
- Location on the body – The closer a tattoo is to the heart, the better circulation supports faster ink removal. Extremities like feet take longer.
- Ink depth and application – Professional tattoos are applied more consistently than amateur ones, but deeply applied ink can require more sessions.
- Your body’s own healing process – Everyone’s immune system responds differently.
Sessions are spaced 8 weeks apart to give your body time to process the broken-down ink between treatments. Rushing this doesn’t speed things up, it just skips the work your immune system needs to do.
Does Laser Tattoo Removal Hurt?
Yes. It’s worth being upfront about this. It’s generally more uncomfortable than getting the tattoo in the first place.
That said, pain is very manageable, and Caddell’s takes it seriously. The team uses a Zimmer cooling machine, a device that blows intensely cold air onto the skin before, during, and after each laser pulse to reduce the sensation significantly. Additional options include:
- Topical numbing cream (available upon request)
- Squeeze balls to give you something to grip during treatment
- Breathing techniques the team walks you through
Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. The ribs, lower back, and feet tend to be more painful than fleshier areas. If you have a tattoo in a sensitive spot, it’s worth mentioning during your consultation so the team can prepare accordingly.
What About Lightening for a Cover-Up?
Laser tattoo removal isn’t always about complete removal. Many clients come in specifically to lighten a tattoo before getting a cover-up piece.
This is actually a really important step that’s easy to skip, and shouldn’t be. A cover-up tattoo has to be larger and darker than the original design to conceal it. If the original tattoo is still strong, your artist’s options become very limited. The worst outcome is finishing a cover-up only to have the old tattoo ghosting through the new one.
By lightening the existing tattoo first, often in just a few sessions, you give your artist a much cleaner canvas and dramatically expand what’s possible in the new design.
What Happens Between Sessions?
After each treatment, your tattoo will continue to fade for weeks as your immune system processes the fragmented ink. Light swelling, redness, and occasionally some blistering are all normal healing responses.
To support recovery:
- Avoid heat for at least 24 hours (no hot yoga, cardio, or saunas)
- Skip hot tubs for three days
- Aloe or cortisone can be applied immediately after treatment for comfort
The last 20% of ink often takes the longest to clear, so if you’re near the finish line and it feels like progress has slowed, that’s completely normal.
