Where the Confusion Comes From
Here’s what’s technically true: the FDA labels electrolysis as “permanent hair removal” and laser as “permanent hair reduction.” Different words, right?
Honestly, that distinction has always puzzled us. In practice, laser hair removal achieves permanent results for the vast majority of people with dark hair. The FDA labeling is a regulatory thing, not really a reflection of what happens in the treatment room. We’ve been doing this since 1982, and we’ve seen it firsthand thousands of times over.
What actually determines which method is right for you has nothing to do with government labels. It comes down to one thing: your hair color.
The Real Answer: It Depends on Your Hair
- Dark hair (brown or black)? Laser is your best bet, and by a wide margin. Lasers work by targeting pigment in the hair follicle. The darker the hair, the better it responds. Faster results, fewer sessions, lower cost.
- Light hair (blonde, gray, or white)? Electrolysis is the right choice. Laser simply can’t treat hair without pigment, there’s nothing for it to lock onto. Electrolysis uses a tiny probe that emits heat in the follicle, so hair color doesn’t matter at all.
Neither method is better than the other. They’re just built for different hair types. The goal is using the right tool for your hair.
The Time Difference Is Significant, Here’s What That Looks Like
This is where it really hits home, especially when it comes to facial hair removal.
With laser:
- A full facial session takes about 20 minutes
- You come in once a month
- Most clients need 10–15 sessions
With electrolysis:
- It takes roughly 30–50 hours just to clear the face one time
- You’re coming in 1–3 hours every single week
- Total cost for the face typically runs $3,000–$5,000 or more
That’s not a knock on electrolysis, if you have blonde or gray hair, it’s the only option that will actually work, and it’s absolutely worth it. But if you have dark hair and you choose electrolysis because you think it’s “more permanent,” you’re signing up for years of weekly appointments when monthly laser sessions would get you the same result in a fraction of the time.
Can Insurance Help Cover the Cost?
Here’s something a lot of people don’t know: many insurance plans in Washington State do cover hair removal for transgender clients, particularly for facial hair and pre-surgical prep. It’s worth a phone call before you assume you’re paying out of pocket.
When you call your insurance provider, here are the questions to ask:
- Does my plan cover gender-affirming laser hair removal or electrolysis?
- Do I need a letter of medical necessity from my doctor?
- Is a referral required?
- What documentation do I need for reimbursement?
Write down who you talked to and ask for a reference number. It makes follow-up so much easier.
Most insurers will want a letter of medical necessity from your physician or gender care provider. If you’re already working with a gender-affirming healthcare team, they’re usually very familiar with this process and can turn that letter around quickly.
