People often ask me, “How does Laser Hair Removal differ from Electrolysis?” To clarify, let’s delve into the primary distinctions between these two hair removal methods. Both have their unique advantages and are effective for their respective purposes.
Electrolysis
When performing electrolysis, a tiny probe is inserted into the hair follicle. This process produces heat along the probe, targeting and destroying the stem cells and the papilla responsible for hair growth. Achieving the desired results requires multiple sessions, as each hair must be tackled individually.
As treatments progress, you’ll notice the hairs softening, with their growth rate diminishing. Post-treatment, the skin may exhibit redness and tiny raised bumps reminiscent of mosquito bites, typically subsiding within 2-3 hours.
Laser Hair Removal
Laser Hair Removal operates on the principle of targeting melanin, the pigment in hair. Hence, it’s essential for the hair to be of a darker hue like brown, black, or brownish-red for the treatment to be effective.
Unlike electrolysis which deals with individual hairs, the laser technique involves a handpiece that lies on the skin’s surface and identifies multiple hairs at once. The laser heat works its way down the hair shaft, destroying both the stem cells and the papilla.
Remarkably, lasers can target and treat 10-15 hairs in a single second. On average, it takes around 7-15 sessions to achieve optimal results. Just like with electrolysis, you can expect some redness and tiny bumps on the treated area, resembling mosquito bites, but these typically fade within 1-2 hours.
Some factors that contribute to Laser Hair Removal not working:
- Poor quality laser
- Untrained technician
- The device used is an Intense Pulsed Light device instead of a laser. The IPL can reduce hairs, but it is a Class III device. Lasers used for Laser Hair Removal are Class IV. Home IPL devices are a Class II.
